In the 4th and first year anniversary issue of KA, we felt it very crucial that the cover choice be someone that embodied the perfect essence of the KA girl. What is that essence you might ask? Well, the answer had to be something that needed no explaining. She had to just be “KA”. Like all things that seemed to happen in the first year of publishing this magazine, it just happened by itself. Donna walked right out of a California mansion into a black helicopter, then jumped out of said helicopter into the sea and swam to a waiting black speed yacht right into our hearts… “She is perfect!” was all we at KA could say collectively of Donna Feldman…

Why do we love GLACE so much? What is not to love… This Canadian water company is making available to us, the world’s purest water – directly from the icebergs of Newfoundland.

Imagine a time when the earth was pure. And imagine a time, tens of thousands of years ago, when all of earth’s water was original, untouched, and absolutely perfect. Imagine water absorbed by the clean atmosphere, and then falling as snow. More snow falls and, it becomes compressed, becomes ice and, as thousands of years pass, it is locked deep and safe inside Greenland’s frozen heart. The heart beats, the ice moves, and gradually it breaks away and an iceberg is born.

Icebergs melt – this is a natural phenomenon that has been going on for thousands of years. And when they melt, they add fresh water to ocean water. There is scientific concern that too much fresh water melting into salt ocean water may have long term effect such as raising sea levels, and/or making natural ocean currents, such as the Gulf Stream, behave differently. Therefore preventing too much ice melting into the sea is a good thing. However, compared to the total amount of iceberg ice melting every year, the ice captured for GLACE Rare Iceberg Water is literally a drop in the ocean.

GLACE, harvested directly from the icebergs, is so exquisitely pure, you will never have experienced anything like it.

JK PLACE CAPRI : Where you will feel that much closer to Heaven.

What is there not to love about Italy; the culture, the romance, the music, the food, and definitely the magic

espressos! It is as if they have something not only in the water but also in the air that allows the best

espressos to only be made in this country. I have seen people actually take the water and the beans,

bring them back to Montreal and use the exact machines, but to no success. The same must be said

about the JK Capri place; take this beauty of a boutique hotel, place it anywhere else and it would not

be the same at all.

Located in Via Province Mariana Grande Capri, a five star luxury boutique hotel overlooking the sea and

what else is there that can be said, Capri, Capri, Capri… there done.

There is also a JK place in Florence and as if one paradise is not enough, they have opened this next JK

in Capri. Imagine a beautiful 5 star boutique hotel but not in the Urban reality like the one in Florence,

but placed on one of the world’s most beautiful islands : Capri.

The interior is by Michele Bonan; classic urban meets country chic. Most rooms have beautiful balconies

facing the sea. JK Place is one of the only hotels in Capri that’s right on the ocean, as well as centrally

located. This is a no expenses spared, no corners cut, beauty of a hotel in an unbeatable location.

The Perks: incredible views, great food, central location, penthouse suite with panoramic view of the Gulf

of Naples, 22 rooms, perfect.

Italian Luxury : Via Prov. Marina Grande, 225-80073, Capri, Italy.

Introducing a new king of Ocean Living – The WHY Yacht – by Hermes. Not only is it beautiful and revolutionary – but it is a “green” luxury

yacht. — All the more reasons for KA to fall in love…

Have you ever met someone who could not relate to the “dream” of living on an island in complete luxury and freedom. However, there is a little hitch with the reality of this dream : Ok great, got the island, got the luxury…now what? What do we do with the endless days stretched out in front of us?

Now, in my perfect dream, this Island would come with a motor and a navigation system, it would also leave as little impact on the environment as possible, and if I am dreaming, I might as well throw in my favorite luxury brand Hermes somewhere in the design mix.

You see a piece of land with a private villa can only fulfill a part of this dream for the simple reason that it doesn’t move! A yacht on the other hand offers the freedom to move but usually feels like you are part of a machine (not yet fully designed for the sake of living but more as a glorified luxury vehicle on water) Something that you might sleep in when you park, but the idea of living in it as you would your private villa is not really as inviting.

This is all about to change and we are all over this change, with the WHY concept the idea of the moving island dream is a conceptual and physical reality. The moving island is developed with the “latest most advanced sustainable technologies, recycling thermal energy, as well as any organic and inorganic waste. The architecture of the whole project fits perfectly in the environment – there are no excesses, nothing is superfluous, the impact on the sea is a minimum. This is equivalent to having ones cake and eating it too.

This marriage of Hermes and Wally a seeming “match made in heaven” has done to Yacht making what the wheels have done to cars and KA is loving it fully.

A DREAM… AN ISLAND… AN ART OF LIVING ON THE SEA

LUCA BASSANI ANTIVARI

President and CEO, Wally

Luca Bassani Antivari was born in Milan and holds a degree in economics from Bocconi University. From 1980 to 1989, he was managing director of the Milan-based company BTicino, an electrical components giant founded by his family. He came to his love of sailing as a child through his parents. Having won several international and world championships in different classes, he designed his first boat for his father, who sailed it around the world three times. In 1993, he founded Wally, a company named after his boat, a 25-metre sloop, the first Wallygator, designed and built for his family in 1989. He revolutionized the yachting world with sleek, fast and easy-to-handle sailing yachts built of carbon fibre. Likewise for powerboats, launched in 2001. Between Monaco, where the headquarters are located, and Ancona, on the Italian Adriatic coast where the shipyards are, Wally has launched over 120 boats. They have become, like the 118 Wallypower exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2004, icons in the world of design, making Wally an international benchmark.

Conversation between Luca Bassani Antivari, Pierre-Alexis Dumas and Gabriele Pezzini creators of WHY — Wally Hermes Yachts.

Paris- May 2009

Do you remember the first time you set foot on a boat?

Luca Bassani Antivari — It was in Portofino. My parents loved the sea. What I remember is a large boat, Miranda, which won all the races! I was six and there were big waves. I was spellbound! My father retired when he was sixty and he and my mother boarded their sailing yacht to tour the world, a tour that ended up lasting twenty years. It was a yacht that I had designed free hand. My first boat…

Pierre Alexis Dumas — I was two years old and just starting to walk. We were in Greece, on the Island of Spetses. It was a fisherman’s boat in the Aegean.

Gabriele Pezzini — A sailing boat, while on holiday in the Mediterranean. I was a student, invited by a friend who loved sailing. It was fantastic, complete with a storm. We weren’t the least bit afraid! I even thought it was funny.

With its unusual dimensions and design, is the first WHY boat a mere utopia?

Pierre Alexis Dumas — For six generations, Hermès has grown thanks to extraordinary designs, which our craftsmen need in order to push their limits. This monumental project fulfils our dreams. It’s not about a utopia, but rather about making a dream come true, the dream of living on water in harmony with the elements and in absolute comfort.

Luca Bassani Antivari — My imagination has no bounds. Designing a boat that resembles an island is not a utopia. We’re proving that right now, aren’t we?

Could you sum up in a few words what this boat represents for you?

In fashion, there is a saying that just because you are able to put a print on a bought American Apparel T-shirt, does not make you a designer. The same can be said in the world of DJs, where with the advent of the “DJ stars” gimmick, has taken over from clear raw talent.

Jojo Flores is the real deal, this DJ’s been spinning now for over 25 years. He is what makes you want to go out again and again…and again — and brings to mind the song by Fat Boy Slim “If this don’t make your booty move, your booty must be dead.”

Adding to a long list of accomplishments, Jojo has just recently been added as resident Dj at New York’s famed club, Cielo. He also spins at club Pink (San Fransisco, Chicago, Miami) and at Deep, in LA. There isn’t a party place left on this planet this man hasn’t rocked. He was voted “Best International DJ” four years running {2002-2005} by NYC’s Underground Archives. As if playing the music wasn’t enough, this maverick is adding music production to the list with Gotsoul Records — mixing Kinkysweet’s Afterdark Montreal CD. Jojo’s Therapy Nights have been a Montreal hit for more years running now than any other. Jojo has also added the most challenging and rewarding of roles to his roster of accomplishments; that of a proud father to a beautiful son and step-daughter. KA Magazine voted Jojo Flores as the best DJ in Montreal.

KA — How do you do it to travel, live out of suitcases and perform top shape at the end of touch down…only to repack and do it again in another city?

JF — Sometimes I ask myself the same question!? I just tell myself to “do it”. I am here or there to perform for a crowd and my responsibility to give them what they came for is predominant in me. I have an immense sense of gratitude and obligation to “rock the house” for individuals that come out to support me. I also realise the need for some people to escape through music, to help them leave their problems behind, albeit for a brief time. Music is therapy and I enjoy delivering it to the best of my ability. I absolutely hate letting people down in this way, so I have disciplined myself to be in top shape and I physically do this by taking lots of naps, exercising (hockey 2-3 times a week), and trying my hardest to maintain a healthy diet. Mentally, I am a kid all over again. I LOVE playing to/for a crowd, it is really second nature to me. It is the best feeling in the world, I have no difficulties whatsoever even if I am extremely drained physically. I am drug free, alcohol free, now caffeine free and my Ayurvedic treatments help keep me grounded. Now, if I could just stay away from desserts!

KA — What city did you have the best time playing in and what about that city did it for you?

JF — Definitely Athens… always a great party. The history of this place is insane, the food is delicious, the Acropolis, the beautiful islands (Santorini is magical), and the people. Mostly the people do it for me. They are so friendly, inviting, hospitable and down to earth… they really appreciate the music. There is a mix of artistic, wealthy, and business people that I have been able to incorporate like no other place. The music has been able to break down certain class barriers that is very hard to achieve considering Soulful House is not mainstream music. Most importantly, the majority of cities I play in, I stay in hotels, but not Athens. I have met some truly amazing people whom I now consider close friends, they treat me like family. They offer me their home as if it were my own. Thank you Tiki and Larry.

KA — Now that Djs are “stars”, do you think this is getting in the way of creating good music for the love of good music?

JF — Yes, I do think the star status has been in the way of creating good music, for at least the last five years. To maintain or elevate their status, Djs have to release music consistently therefore not dedicating enough time for each production. And often times, this process (from start to finish) of producing a track is considerably D.I.Y. Hence, a lot of music is now more “disposable” than ever before. Due to this phenomenon, it is rare to have a “club anthem”. For example, the “Whistle Song”, Ultra Nate’s “Free”, “Gypsy Woman”— when these songs came out, all the House Dj’s worldwide were playing them for three to five months. Presently, you would be lucky to produce a hit song and have it played internationally for a month or two. There’s so much music coming out every week, even I have a hard time keeping up.

KA — You were doing demo tapes when no one in Montreal was pushing their music that way. You were creating your own signature club night experience when Djs were at the mercy of club owners and promoters. What’s next — where do you see this going?

JF —For starters, I have developers in San Francisco working on a Jojoflores iPhone application due out at the end of summer. I’m also endorsing a niche social networking site for House music. Think Facebook, but for House music lovers. I see people using these platforms to listen and purchase music and merchandise. It becomes a place for them to socialise, learn about their favorite artists and be exposed to new artists of the same genre all in an environment that is like minded. Like a one stop shop. Also, I consider myself a world traveller, therefore I am always thinking outside of Montreal, Canada. My goal is to take Gotsoul, Therapy & Jojoflores worldwide, by using the aforementioned as well as yesterdays old school (grass roots) marketing – which I still have great faith in, there is nothing like the old school to maintain personal interaction.

KA — What is the single event that has changed you and the way you view life?

JF — My first international gig in Bordeaux, France. It opened my eyes to so many new opportunities, it was exciting. It was an incredible milestone for me, we (Djs) were not known to travel the globe at that time except for a handful of A-list DJs, it really catapulted me and my mind into another league….From my humble beginnings, travelling has allowed me the experiences to alter my thinking positively and accept that anything is possible. It keeps me wanting to discover more and yet understand that the more I travel, the more similarities we all have in common on a global level. Travelling is a great way to observe life, it’s intricacies and to appreciate the simple yet important aspects of it, like my family.

KA — What motivates you, to keep the music going?

JF — My audience, the dancers, and music lovers. I enjoy making people dance, allowing individuals the space and time to express themselves through movement on a particular night. It is very now. The moments are what matter, sometimes a song I play will affect a person deeply, other times it creates a new memory or brings one back. New music also motivates me, when I hear something fresh or receive an unreleased exclusive track, I try to break it – play it 2-3 times in my set so it stands out. I take pride when someone discovers new music from my performance. In this capacity, I like being a tastemaker. There is also the challenge of converting people who are not into House music; it is motivating since I consider Soulful/Deep House music to be underground, and it is not often easy to break the barrier of the masses listening to contemporary big budget advertising billboard charts. Luckily, I’m just one of many messengers trying to spread the music.

KA — Beyond music, how do you find inspiration?

JF — I find inspiration through art, film, and other self-made individuals. Art helps inspire my branding, movies inspire my perception of life – soundtracks also do this in a more subtle way. I have great respect for self made individuals that have paved the way for many of us. Some have succeeded in times and places that were daunting and against all odds. Their success’ display a tenacity and a drive that is inspiring to me. They have helped me raise my bar and my expectations of myself and of others.

KA — What is the best advice you have received in your career?

JF — An old wise friend of mine, Terence Toy, a legendary L.A. Dj, was one of the first persons to bring me to L.A. back in the mid-nineties. He told me once to create my brand and stick with it no matter what. And make sure to always use my logo as often as possible in all the best places. This has served me well endlessy.

KA — Is there somewhere you have not yet played that you would consider a dream deal?

JF — Playing the Precious Hall in Sapporo, Japan. It boasts the world’s best sound system; I’m a huge fan of the Japanese culture and the combination of my two most favorite things in life, music and art. That would be one of the last bastions for me, definitely a dream deal.

KA — What are three things you would change if you had three wishes in the music world?

JF —

1: I wish artists would have the ability to teleport themselves to their gigs….this would eliminate airport security, jet lag, terrible airline food, just “poof” and you are there …of course for a nominal fee.

2: I wish that music videos did not have the influence they do on the popularity of an average song. In other words, if it is a “terrible” song but the video is amazing, it none the less becomes a hit.

3: I wish I had a double so I can be in two places at the same time….I have often been offered two amazing gigs that land on the same day! Or better yet, send my hologram to another gig simultaneously!!

KA — What is on jojoflores’ playlist?

JF —

Bill Whithers – Who Is She (Henrik Schwarz Remix)

Radiohead – Creep (Tony Loreto & Master Kev Remix)

Dennis Ferrer – Hey!

Stevie Wonder – Do I Do (jojoflores Therapy Edit)

Tim Wright – Thirst (Luciano’s Dancehall Mix)

Osunlade – Cantos a Ochun et Oya (Live Ruff Mix)

Block 16 – Morning Sun (jojoflores Therapy Edit)

Tracy Chapman – Crossroads (Boddhi Satva Afriki Remix)

Mary J. Blige – PMS (Quentin Harris Remix)

Dop – Vsop (Original Mix)

Jazzanova – I Can See (Telepaticos Re-Rub)

… and lately a lot of Michael Jackson (R.I.P.)

BVLGARI BLV

BLV Eau de Parfum II is inspired by a modern vision of the colour blue that suggests the extremely natural
character of the fragrance and at the same time reveals its intense, sophisticated side. The name -BLV
Eau de Parfum II – conveys both conceptual and formal richness, capturing the evocative power of the
Bulgari brand and becoming an ideal anagram of the essence of the contemporary jeweller.
Classification: This is a positive, reassuring fragrance, able to bring opposites together: freshness
and naturalness on the one side, and a highly intense perfuming effect on the other.
Characteristics: This creation is based on essential things, on the foundation stones of perfumery:
amber, iris, musks, wood, patchouli flowers, violets.
Top note: Head notes of luminous violet delicately blended with subtle, airy hints of star anise and
liquorice and brightened by fresh, light, frosty mandarin.
Middle note: The heart notes conceal an unexpected soul - iris absolute, an exclusive
floral touch – blended with a warm, woody base enhanced by Haitian vetiver,
which gives BLV Eau de Parfum II an elegant exotic touch. Before evolving into the
base notes, the fragrance is enriched with intense patchouli flower, an original
diversion that accompanies the final moments of the essence.
Base note: An unusual sensual accord of three amber notes, where the sensuous
caress of benzoin blends with the suggestive intensity of ambergris and the cistus
flower and ends with the velvety tones of musk, the last irresistible sensation.
CREED LOVE IN WHITE

Worn and enjoyed by not one, but two, First Ladies of the United States, Love In White evokes
America’s most visible and influential women. It is the first CREED fragrance ever to debut in
the USA, as opposed to France. On the night of November 16, 2005, the exterior lights of the
Empire State Building were pure white in honor of the debut of Love In White. The fragrance
takes its name from Mr. CREED’s love of sailing.
Classification: Floral / Oriental
Characteristics: Hand-made with ingredients of rare quality from five continents.
A worldly mix of blossoms in the hands of Mr. CREED becomes a fragrance at once
exclusive and welcoming.
Top note: Orange zest from southern Spain.
Middle notes: Young iridescent rice husk from Tonkin in the south Asian seas; iris
from Egypt; white jasmine from the Italian coast; daffodils from the French Riviera
; magnolia from the mountains of Guatemala; and Bulgarian rose.
Base notes: Vanilla from the island of Java; ambergris from Calabria; sandalwood
from Mysore, India.
Comparatives: Sublime Vanille, Vanisia, Jasmin Imperatrice Eugenie, Acqua Fiorentina
CREED SUBLIME VANILLE

The first in a new CREED collection called Royal Exclusives, CREED Sublime Vanille
is an investment-quality fragrance and object of art from master perfumer Olivier
CREED and his son, Erwin. The new collection is one of the most ambitious projects
in CREED’s 249 years, a statement to the aesthetic world about the legacy, quality and
collectability of fragrance as art.
Classification: Exotic vanillas hand blended with light citrus and rare musk
Characteristics: Rich with fine vanilla, a most beloved fragrance element across all
times, places and cultures: a truly enduring ingredient. The packaging honors
perfumery’s finest traditions, still practiced by CREED: hand-blown Pochet glass
bottle etched with CREED’s crest, multi-faceted cut glass stopper that turns bottle
into sculpture and gold-and-fabric pump for releasing scent.
Top note: Vanilla from climbing orchids of Tahiti, heady Bourbon vanilla of South
America.
Middle note: Luscious Tonka bean for profound depth.
Base note: A touch of bergamot orange for a citrus accent with a bracing dab of
Calabrian lemon. Rare musk.
Comparatives: Vanisia, Love In White, Original Santal

There is probably no other profession that you hear more phrases of love uttered than in the DJ profession.
DJ’s just love music, period. They love to rock the house, and they love the sight of a full dance floor — so
much so that once they have the house on fire they are hard pressed to cool it down. On first sight, DJ Tito
seems like just your average tattooed pretty boy DJ, but upon a short conversation add “lover” to the list
please: Lover of music, life and family. Oh yeah an d take out the word “average”, cause there is nothing
average about this DJ.

KA — Music in it’s most positive seems to be all about the love. Was love the main factor in your choice
of being a DJ?
TM — Yes, my choice to work in the music industry was because since my childhood I have been in love
with music . The first gift I asked Santa Claus for was for a Michael Jackson Thriller vinyl record. It is
thanks to MJ that I realized that my life would revolve around music.
KA — You have played practically in every major city in the world. Where have you received the most love
for your music?
TM — In Belgrade, Moscow and Sao Paulo and of course lovely Canada (just to name a few places) I
received the most love for my music. In these cities, the crowd is only interested in music, just music,
no non-sense. This is great for a DJ because he/she is able to play music that the crowd is really
passionate about.
KA — When you played at Paris Hilton’s live private Concert in Cannes, why was this party so
much fun for you?
TM — I don’t know if I would use the word “fun” to describe the party….It was business as usual…
Paris is a cool girl but the people did not come for the music, they came for her.
KA — You have played private parties for Francis Ford Coppola to Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee
in between, but still you shun having your photos splashed about with celebrities — why is this?
TM — LOL. I am too cool for the celebrities. I play for so many that it makes no difference. …No
seriously, these parties were really private and the celebrities were there to have a good time and
enjoy themselves so no photographers were allowed.
KA — DJ’s have become “gods” to their followers in most cases creating fans who follow the DJs
more intensely than the artists whose music they are playing, Where do you see this trend going.?
TM — I don’t know if I am considered to be a “god”…But thanks a lot for the compliment. I have
been in this business for the past 18 years and I have seen a huge evolution for DJs. This evolution
is both good and bad. Good for DJs who really love what they do and are talented. And bad for
imposters who pretend to be DJs but only do it for the money and not for the love of music.
To answer your question, I am not sure where this trend is going becaus already 10 years
ago it was said that DJs would no longer exist because of technology but look at what’s
happening today….
KA — You have collaborated with cult DJs such as Carl Cox, “Daft Punk” then went ahead and dived
right into playing with Hip Hop heavy weights Cut Killer and DJ Mase to name a few. How were you
able to do this transition in a field where DJs become genre specific and entrenched in one particular
style?
TM — I am someone who adapts myself and I simply love music. Hip Hop, House…whatever its
the same love. I am a House music DJ but my background is Funk, Soul, Blues and R&B. I believe
that working with various genres is beneficial because it takes music to a different level. For me,
working with different styles of music gives another dimension to my productions.
KA — Which City in the world inspires you the most and challenges you to be your best always?
TM — New York baby. New York inspires me…just like Jay-Z says.
KA — How do you create down time to recharge your batteries?
TM — The best way for me to recharge my batteries is spend time with my family. My aunt cooks
for me, and I hang out with my cousins. This is great because it grounds me. In this business
there is a lot of bullshit and its important to know where one comes from and who one is. Its with
my family and friends that I seek refuge from all the fakeness that exists in the nightlife industry.
KA — What’s on your personal playlist?
TM — This is a difficult question for me. Like I told you, I love music…all of it.

KA — What single act of unselfish love has created the most profound effect on you and how you
see the world?
TM — The single act of unselfish love I received was from my grandmother , god rest her soul. This
gave me the right values and morals and showed me that you need to fight for yourself in life.
KA — How do you keep grounded while performing to thousands of adoring fans?
TM — Staying yourself and never forgetting where you come from.
KA — What’s your personal mantra?
TM — My mantra is that I am able to live off of my passion. This is rare…and I am lucky because
I am one of the few people who is able to do this.
KA — When life gets you down, how do you switch this up and create positivity?
TM — I go into my studio and I make music. Making music is my way to escape negativity
and make me positive!
KA — Music has the power to change the way we think and see the world around us, how
do you as a DJ use this power to effect positive change?
TM — By spinning and spreading my love of music everywhere I can make positive changes.
Everyone loves music, whichever style it may be so we are all connected by one love. This is
the power of music and being a DJ.

KA — A fact of the industry is that middle is the norm we live in a world of marketing to
the masses which tends to choke true talent- how did you rise above this?
TM — I did not do anything to rise above this. I am just who I am and play the music that
I love. It is thanks to you and my fans that I am where I am today. Thank you for this.
KA — How important is “giving back” to you?
TM — I think it is very important to “give back”. In this business if you don’t “give back”
you are alone. The reason why I am so international is because every time I play I “give back” the energy
and the love that I receive when I spin. I spin in the best venues because they always trust me.
KA — Who is Tito Miami?
TM — Tito Miami is just a random guy who is passionate about music…..who wants to meet him ? :)
