Read moreInternational Women’s Day has been celebrated for more than 100 years, and even though I knew it existed, it was always somewhere in the back of my mind sort of like my birthdays actually. An important day, but one that still never made it to the front of my mind like say, rent every month.
This has all changed thanks to an amazing woman, Bita Catellan, who has made me see the full importance of such a day. The stats are staggering, women all over the world in ratio to men are apx. 1.1 males to females, in a world with a population of close to 7 billion – you get the point. Yet, despite many success in empowering women, the issues still exist ranging from cultural, political to economic. For a full read just Google® “women’s rights 2012″.
I for one am all for International Women’s Day, or like in some areas of the world, Women’s week. But I really think it should be more like International Women’s Year. Yes, each year at the beginning of the year we are made aware of the following: Nothing and no one would exist PERIOD if it were not for women. To hammer the point home, let’s even get clearer. There would be no Google, no Face Book,no iPad, no great wall of China, no Space Shuttle Challenger, No Mona Lisa, or music of any kind, KA Magazine, and NO PEOPLE.
So I for one am all for International women’s day, but even though the themes such as celebrating women’s roles in the economic prosperity of rural, remote and Northern regions are valid and well needed, we should never forget the bigger theme. Thank you ladies for the survival of our species.
Read moreThe term “Creative City” really is misleading as a City in and of itself cannot be creative, but in the case of Montreal I do think that the “City” does play an integral role in the creativity of its artists. We have to be all somewhat creative to get on in Montreal. The rules so to speak, are not as cut and clear as in other cities. Case in point; go to a stop light in Mtl. observe – now go to a stop light (as a pedestrian) in say, T.O. and observe…
Montreal just seems to bring out the creatives, as the song goes “If you can make it here you can make it any where”, a reference to NYC. But I believe that if you can make it in Montreal as an artist, you can make it anywhere. It is not easy to be an artist period, but like Q-Tip, from A Tribe Called Quest so eloquently said in a recent interview: “This is not what I do, this is what I am, there is no retirement from what I am”.
KA Magazine caught up with designer Ifigenia Papadimitriou, for Montreal’s own Bod&Christensen between her travels to China, India and Vegas in between, we had a little glimpse in the mercurial mind of the artist. This drop dead gorgeous young designer is an example of why Montreal is so darned creative, and if that is not enough, she also is case in point for my second argument: Montreal has the most beautiful women in the world. Full interview with Ifigenia in KA Vol.5.
Read moreWe’ve been about Karma since the very first issue of KA Magazine. With the discovery of Fisker Automotive, our love affair with Karma was sealed. This is a vehicle that has brought new meaning to the term “hybrid car”. Imagine driving a car that is not only energy efficient but also has the sleek curves and engine power of a Vantage. Not too difficult for designer Henrik Fisker (interviewed in KA Vol. 1) who was previously the design director at Aston Martin. Here’s a quick snapshot: Up front there’s a 260-hp, GM-supplied four-cylinder engine, and an American-made lithium-ion battery pack; a twin AC motor straddles the rear axle that delivers 402 horsepower; beautiful aluminum skin radiates; a solar-cell roof impresses; faux suede interiors are sumptuous; and rescued California wildfire hardwood give it all an earthy touch. To make things sweeter, this sexy beast is now available in Canada! Fisker Automotive has developed partnerships with luxury dealers in Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto so we will finally start seeing the Karma on Canadian roads – www.fiskerautomotive.com
Read moreWe discovered Daniel Stanford like all good things: by chance (and a hot cup of coffee on a cold winter’s day). No really, that is exactly how it happened! I was sitting having coffee, and this beautiful man happens to walk by and we both say “hey! I know you! What’s up?” Well what’s up is nothing less than the most beautiful photo to artwork I have seen. The man loves beauty and it shows, but his love of beauty doesn’t stop and the female form, for his images of horses – as one lover of Daniel Stanford’s work enthused “made me cry”.

KA loves Bvlgari – the luxe, the attention to detail and the fact that they’ve been making exquisite masterpieces since 1884! To celebrate this longevity, Bvlgari has launched an exhibition at the Aurora Museum in Shanghai, entitled “125 Years of Italian Magnificence” showcasing nearly 600 pieces created from the opening of the very first Bvlgari store on Via Sistina, Rome, 1884, through to the present day.

Read moreIn the fifties, Mademoiselle Chanel created what would now be a staple piece in every woman’s closet : The little black jacket. Since Karl Lagerfeld became designer for CHANEL in 1983, he has endlessly reinvented this timeless and iconic piece in each of his collections.
With the help of former French Vogue editor Carine Roitfield, Karl Lagerfeld has captured the jacket’s versatility in a series of photographs as the piece is worn by a select group of CHANEL muses – such as Vanessa Paradis, Sarah Jessica Parker and British model Alice Dellal to name a few.
These images will be published in a new picture-based book entitled “The Little Black Jacket: CHANEL’s classic revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld” launching on March 21st and will be celebrated through an exhibition in Tokyo running until April 2012.

Read moreOnce again Valentine’s Day is upon us and like all things mass, we have the lovers and the haters, but why hate on love today?… Sure it’s sort of sucks to hit this day with only self-love, but that’s cool! A little self-love can go a long way, so stop hating, just stop!!! Go out, buy some pharmacy cheap chocolate, and just let it go for one day or night – just let all the stuff go and become one with Valentine’s.
Believe me I know, I have spent my whole life hating on Valentine’s. But low and behold each year, it just seems to come back like the ex that refuses to take her tooth brush from out of my bathroom (it’s over can you just come and get your toothbrush please!)
Ka loves Valentine’s Day and KA loves lovers… So to all the lovers out there and to show just how much of a lover we at KA are …Happy Valentines.
KA’s pick of most amazing couple of the year is Bita and Paolo Cattelan… married 20 years and still in love. (I know, when did they tie the knot, age 10?)
You see folks, not only does love feel good (judging form these two love birds) it also makes you look good!!!!
